Apple's iOS 9 News: Release Date, Features and Supported Devices

Along with OS X EI and Watch OS 2, iOS 9 was unveiled to the public in Apple's 2015 WWDC. The interface of this new operating system changes little. It mainly improves greatly in battery life, security, Siri intelligence, etc.

According to Apple's announcement, "a-better-experience-with-every-touch iOS 9 is full of enhancements you will appreciate every day. Your apps become more essential. New multitasking features on iPad make you even more productive. Siri can do more than ever. And new procative suggesting help you get things done before you ask. And improvements at the foundation of the operating system enhance performance, battery life and security."

1. Siri Intelligence

Siri intelligence is the greatest point of improvement. Siri in iOS 9 will be able to organize the archive and provide more accurate content and service, incoming calls and related content recommendation. Apple adds the bran-new newsstand app, News, in iOS 9. It integrates many mainstream media and news all around the world. Users can customize the content according to his interests and needs. Different from other news apps, Apple's News will record user's search history and provide the same content in the later search.

4. Apple Map - "Transit"

Apple's map "Transit" has been added into iOS 9. It covers 10 cities around the world at present and gives your detailed information for commuting via public transport. It can even tell you your walking time and which station entrance to enter and exit from.

The latest statistics reveal that Apple Map can receive up to five billion requests every week.

5. Longer Battery Life

In iOS 9, apps and key technologies have been made more efficient to trim battery usage. Because of ambient light and proximity sensors, iPhone knows if it's facedown on the table and prevents the screen from turning on. And the new Low Power mode lets you extend your battery life even further. It is claimed that the battery life is extended about three hours.

6. Double Screen Mode and QuickType Keyboard

iOS 9's double screen mode allows you to multitask on iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 2 and iPad mini 3. 5:5 and 7:3 two sizes choices are available. You can open a second app without leaving the one you are in now. So you can quickly respond to a text, browse the web or something else. You just need to slide that app away and get back to the one you were using before.

Meanwhile, QuickType is introduced in iOS 9 on iPad. You can Shape up your text in no time with an all-new Shortcut Bar, convenient editing tools, and a handy new way to select text with Multi-Touch gestures.

7. Improved Security

iOS 9 advances security by strengthening the passcode that protects your devices and by making it harder for others to get unauthorized access to your Apple ID account as well as your personal information.

The passcodes has been increased from four digits to six digits. Besides, with two-factor authentication, you will be prompted for a verification code when you sign in from a new browser or on a new device.

8. Other Functions

Except for above aspects, Homekit and CarPlay have been improved as well. iCloud connection option has been introduced into Homkit for the first time. Users can remotely control Homekit-related intelligent devices via iCloud. As for CarPlay, the highlight lies in wireless connection.

And the size of iOS 9 is decreased to 1.3GB from 4.6GB, which is really a good news for those whose iPhone storage is greatly limited.

9.iOS 9 Supported Devices

Apple announces that all iPhone, iPad and iPod compatible with iOS 8 can be upgraded to iOS 9, including iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad 3rd /4th generation, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini3 and iPod touch 5th generation.
