When we sign up for iCloud, we automatically get 5GB of free storage for Mail, Backup, iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive. If you exceed free iCloud storage plan, learn how to manage iCloud storage on iPhone or iPad, and how to free up space on iPhone/iPad for more iCloud storage.
On iOS10/9/8 devices, open Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage.
On iOS 7 or earlier version of iOS, open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
Below I will give you some of the tips to free up iCloud storage on iPhone/iPad and where you can buy more storage.
Tip 1. Delete old backups on iPhone/iPad to free up extra space
Tip 2. Turn off iCloud Photo Library
Tip 3. Transfer iPhone Photos, Videos, Contacts, etc. to computer for backup
Tip 4. Buy more iCloud storage
Deleting old backups will clean up iCloud storage space for other things. Following the steps on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to clean old iCloud backups:
1. Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage (Storage & Backup in iOS 7 or below) > Manage Storage
2. In Backups, tap the name of your iPhone.
3. Under “BACKUP OPTIONS”, you can turn off the data that you do not want to back up. In the prompted window, choose “Turn Off & Delete”, thus you will turn off backup for this app and remove all of its data from iCloud.
Enable iCloud Photo Library can automatically upload and store your entire library in iCloud to access photos and videos from all your devices. You can still use My Photo Stream to sync new photos between devices without using any iCloud storage space.
Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos, and switch the button to OFF in iCloud Photo Library.
iCloud should not be the only way for data backup, and now people have less confidence in iCloud after photos leak. Therefore, transferring photos/videos to local is a safer. Here I recommend you a free iOS transfer tool –iPhone Care Pro.
iPhone Care Pro helps you manage and transfer 8 types of iPhone/iPad files (Contact, Note, Calendar, App, Music, Video, Bookmark, Photo) to computer.
Open iPhone Care Pro and connect your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to computer via a USB cable. Choose Files Manager on the main interface.
Choose one of file types that you want to backup and transfer.
There are several edit options: Add, Delete, Export to, and Refresh. So you can add new photos from computer to device, or export photos to computer for backup.
After backing up important data to computer, you can turn off this type of data in iCloud backup and delete these photos from your iPhone or iPad to reclaim both iCloud storage and free up space on iPhone or iPad.
You can extend iCloud storage from your device directly.
1. Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage, tap on “Buy More Storage”.
2. Choose the suitable storage plan and tap on it.
3. Click Buy button in the upper right corner.
4. Enter your Apple ID password to finish the purchase.
Done! You have several choices to manage iCloud storage on iOS device. Personally I am inclined to use iPhone Care Pro because it is easy & safe, and free.
