What is the most valuable possession a person can have in this technology era? If your answer is money or house or car, then you are wrong. It’s data. That’s why the WannaCry ransomware that was recently taking the world by storm is scary because it keeps you from accessing your data before you paid the ransom. Imagine what a bank would be if it can’t access its customer’s data? Or how can a hospital does its job effectively if it doesn’t have patient’s data?

But long before the ransomware, there’s already one major threat that has been haunting computer users everywhere regarding their valuable data: hard drive crash. And even though most of the time the Armageddon comes with some warnings, tons of people still lose their data due to hard drive crash every day.

If you are one of them, and you are trying to save your data, you could try these free crashed hard drive data recovery software below.

Always Try The Pros if You Can

Here’s one of the time when contacting the professionals is the first advice that you will get. The process of recovering your data from a crashed hard drive is not something that a normal computer user can do. You might get into the worse position that you originally are due to some stupid mistakes that you do.

If you have important data that you want to save from the crashed hard drive, contact the professional.

With that being said, not everybody can afford data recovery specialist. Others might want to know how far they can go before raising the white flag. To honor those people, here we go.

Get Your Hands Dirty

Let us get something straight before we begin. When your hard drive is showing the sign of its end, there’s almost nothing that you can do but watch it dies. But you can do something about the content at these last moments: try to salvage as much data as you can. If you are ready to take the matter into your hands and will take responsibility for any outcome, you could:

1. Get Help from Tiny Linux

You won’t have too much trouble moving your data to another hard drive if the one that is dying is an external hard drive. But what if it’s the main drive that is also hosting your operating system? There’s no way to turn on your system using the crashed drive.

You could try to get help from one of the tiny Linux distros that could be booted from an USB drive such as Pocket Rocket Linux. It downloads in seconds, boot fast and run fast, and includes a complete suite of desktop computing apps from browsers to the text editor.

Set your computer BIOS to boot from removable drive first, plug in the USB, and let it run.

You can then plug a good external drive and copy all the data that you can from the dying hard drive inside.

2. Use Another Computer to Retrieve Data from Crash HDD

Do you have another working computer? Do you like to tear things apart? If you answer yes to both questions, then maybe this option is for you.

Open up the troubled computer and take out the dying hard drive. Use one of the USB to IDE-SATA hard drive connectors to plug the dying hard drive as an external hard drive. Then copy all the content that you want to save to the working computer hard drive.

3. Recover Data from a Crashed Computer Hard Drive with Data Recovery WinPE

When manual copy and paste doesn’t work, it’s time to bring in the cavalry. Some software can help you recover data from a damaged drive. But please note that these apps can only do so much as the data that you will be able to recover will depend on how damage the drive is.

The recommended tool to do that kind of job is Data Recovery WinPE, which can help you enter your computer before recovery to retrieve your lost data even you cannot access to your hard drive.
